Pre-Exam Readiness Check Step 6: Test your microphone

Your invigilator will use the microphone and speakers within your laptop or computer to communicate with you on exam day.

Try the following general troubleshooting steps below if you are unable to access or use your microphone.

  • Check that the microphone volume is set high (and not muted) within the computer audio settings
  • Close any other programmes that may be using your microphone (like Teams, Zoom etc)
  • Disconnect any other devices that may be being used as a microphone (such as headphones) from your computer
  • Try to restart your computer and start the PERC again

A. Follow these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Close Safe Exam Browser by clicking the QUIT icon in the bottom right hand corner and entering QUIT password QUIT2804.
  2. Open another programme that uses your microphone and verify that the microphone is working.
  3. If the microphone is not working, this indicates there may be an issue with your mic. You will need to find a replacement device (note use of headphones are not permitted) and then restart the Pre-Exam Readiness Check.
  4. If the microphone is working in another programme, you should close that programme, and restart your laptop/computer. You should then reattempt the Pre-Exam Readiness Check in full.
  5. Check your device’s settings and ensure that you have given Safe Exam Browser access to your microphone.
