Pre-Exam Readiness Check Step 7: Test your speakers

Your invigilator will use the microphone and speakers within your laptop or computer to communicate with you on exam day.

Try the following general troubleshooting steps below if you are unable to access or use your speakers.

  • Check that the speaker volume is set high (and not muted) within the computer audio settings
  • Close any other programmes that may be using your speakers (like Teams, Zoom etc)
  • Disconnect any other devices that may be being used as a speaker (such as headphones) from your computer, including Bluetooth enabled devices
  • Try to restart your computer and start the PERC again

A. Follow these troubleshooting steps:

  1. If you can see the wave form moving, but cannot hear the audio file, then please check you have followed all the general troubleshooting steps outlined above.
  2. If you cannot see the waveform moving, and cannot hear the audio file:
    • Close Safe Exam Browser by clicking the QUIT icon in the bottom right hand corner and entering QUIT password QUIT2804.
    • Open another programme that uses your speakers and verify that the speakers are working.
    • If the speakers are not working, this indicates there may be an issue with your computer or speakers. You will need to find a replacement device (note use of headphones are not permitted) and then restart the Pre-Exam Readiness Check.
    • If the speakers are working in another programme, you should close that programme, and restart your laptop/computer. You should then reattempt the Pre-Exam Readiness Check in full.
    • Check your device’s settings and ensure that you have given Safe Exam Browser access to play audio.
